Organization

The University of Delaware Energy Institute is organized under the University of Delaware Senior Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives. The direction of the UD Energy Institute is set by a Steering Committee composed of faculty research leaders in the energy field from across the University. Broader perspectives on national needs and opportunities are provided by an External Advisory Board, consisting of respected leaders from both the public and private sectors.

Jingguang G. Chen, Interim Director

Jingguang Chen is the Claire D. LeClaire Professor of chemical engineering at the University of Delaware. He received his B.S. degree from Nanjing University and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He spent one year in Germany as a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow before starting his career at the Exxon Corporate Research Laboratories in 1989. In 1998 he accepted a faculty position at the University of Delaware and served as the Director of the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology (CCST) from 2000 - 2007. He has over 170 journal publications and 17 US patents. He is very active in serving the surface science and catalysis communities, including responsibilities as the Chair for the Gordon Research Conference on Catalysis in 2002, the Chair of the Philadelphia Catalysis Club in 2004, the Board of Directors for the North American Catalysis Society, and the Catalysis Secretariat of the American Chemical Society. He has won many awards, including the recent Excellence in Catalysis Award from the New York Catalysis Society.

Professor Chen's group is working on the design of carbide and bimetallic catalysts for energy applications, including as electrocatalysts for fuel cells and photoelectrochemical cells, and as heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of biomass-derived oxygenates to chemicals and fuels.

Neeloo Bhatti-McAndrew, Assistant Director

Dr. Neeloo Bhatti-McAndrew is Assistant Director of the University of Delaware Energy Institute. She has played a major role in its establishment and helping set its direction.

Dr. Bhatti-McAndrew received her BS degree in Biochemistry from McGill University, and M.E.S., MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Science all from Yale University. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Argonne National Laboratory before joining the staff there as an Environmental Scientist. She has extensive experience in issues relating to climate change, air quality, energy science, and environmental impact analysis. She served as Technical Coordinator for the U.S. Country Studies Program which was part of the U.S. commitment to the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change that was signed at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit Conference and participated in a number of high-level international missions to Eastern Europe, China, and Asia to provide technical assistance in the areas of climate change, air quality, and human health impacts.

Dr. Bhatti-McAndrew was also a part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change team that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Her research includes a pioneering work that assessed the vulnerability of the Asian region to the potential threat of acid rain. She has also worked as an environmental effects specialist for the World Bank and served as an environmental advisor for the Village of Homer Glen in Illinois.

She has written numerous scientific and journal articles and book chapters.
