ORGANIZATION
The University of Delaware Energy Institute is organized under the University of Delaware Senior Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Initiatives. The direction of the UD Energy Institute is set by a Steering Committee composed of faculty research leaders in the energy field from across the University. Broader perspectives on national needs and opportunities are provided by an External Advisory Board, consisting of respected leaders from both the public and private sectors.
Energy Institute Office
Dr. Michael Klein, Sc.D., DirectorDr. Michael T. Klein started his career at the University of Delaware, where he served as the Elizabeth Inez Kelley Professor of Chemical Engineering as well as Department Chair, Director of the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology, and Associate Dean. He then moved to Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, to become the Dean of Engineering and the Board of Governors Professor of Chemical Engineering. On July 1, 2010, he returned to the University of Delaware to assume his present position as the Director of the University of Delaware Energy Institute and the Dan Rich Chair of Energy.
Professor Klein received a BChE from the University of Delaware in 1977 and a Sc. D. from MIT in 1981, both in Chemical Engineering. The author of over 200 technical papers and the lead author of the text Molecular Modeling in Heavy Hydrocarbon Conversions, he is active in research in the area of chemical reaction engineering, with special emphasis on the kinetics of complex systems. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the ACS journal Energy and Fuels and has received the R. H. Wilhelm Award in Chemical Reaction Engineering from the AIChE, the NSF PYI Award and the ACS Delaware Valley Section Award.
Neeloo Bhatti-McAndrew, Associate DirectorDr. Neeloo Bhatti-McAndrew is Associate Director of the University of Delaware Energy Institute. She has played a major role in its establishment and helping set its direction.
Dr. Bhatti-McAndrew received her BS degree in Biochemistry from McGill University, and M.E.S., MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Science all from Yale University. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Argonne National Laboratory before joining the staff there as an Environmental Scientist. She has extensive experience in issues relating to climate change, air quality, energy science, and environmental impact analysis. She served as Technical Coordinator for the U.S. Country Studies Program which was part of the U.S. commitment to the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change that was signed at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit Conference and participated in a number of high-level international missions to Eastern Europe, China, and Asia to provide technical assistance in the areas of climate change, air quality, and human health impacts.
Dr. Bhatti-McAndrew was also a part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change team that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Her research includes a pioneering work that assessed the vulnerability of the Asian region to the potential threat of acid rain. She has also worked as an environmental effects specialist for the World Bank and served as an environmental advisor for the Village of Homer Glen in Illinois.
She has written numerous scientific and journal articles and book chapters.
Council of Fellows and Structure
