Energy is the very driving force of our everyday life. Thus it is not surprising that the issues associated with its supply and utilization have become a dominant focus of modern society. It is now more imperative than ever to consider energy in a comprehensive and holistic manner in order to meet the needs of humanity while minimizing the costs and environmental impacts associated with energy production and consumption.

Mission
The overall mission of the University of Delaware Energy Institute is to marshal and expand the University's science, engineering, and public policy expertise in new and emerging energy technologies and, with its industry and government partners, to use this research to address the entire spectrum of challenges posed by our future energy needs.

Solutions to the complex energy problems facing us today require knowledge from a wide variety of disciplines. For nearly four decades, researchers at the University of Delaware have been leaders in energy-driven fields ranging from photovoltaics, to catalysts for fuels production, to lightweight composites for fuel-efficient vehicles, as well as in the arena of energy and environmental policy.

"What You Need to Know About Energy"
The Board on Energy and Environmental Systems of the National Research Council recently published this 32-page booklet. Geared to a general audience, the booklet is the first in what will be a series of informational booklets designed to engage readers in current topics in science, engineering, and medicine.
The series is part of the National Academies' Communications Initiative.
